Frequently Asked Questions

No, not unless you want to!

Around 70% of the choir can’t read music so we provide professionally sung recorded line parts to all members using What’s App and Dropbox. If you prefer the parts on a CD, a member of the choir will do this for you.

Apply for membership, and come and meet us. We’re not that scary! We know how nerve-wracking it can be to join a choir for the first time, we’ve all been there. Come along, meet us, do the simple audition (sing Happy Birthday or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star if you want) and most importantly, don’t worry!

We rehearse on Mondays from 7.45pm to 10pm and each member would be expected to attend around five Wednesday night rehearsals during the year. Outside of these, some home rehearsal is required – line parts provided, so practice can be as simple as having your line parts playing in the background at home, or in the car, or on the train. Around 20-30 minutes a week is all that’s needed outside of rehearsal, even less as you get to know the music.

In a choir, everyone is there to help everyone else out. You should let the musical director know about your nerves. The MD can give you breathing techniques to help calm you and ease your nerves. It’s a team effort, so bear that in mind!

We try and take part in a festival once a year on average. A trip with overnight accommodation happens around once every 15-18 months, be it the Cork International Choral Festival, the City of Derry Choir Festival or the Mayo International Choral Festival. Some festivals and competitions take place locally such as the Maynooth Choral Festival and the Feis Ceoil in Dublin.

We have members in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s while the average age is around 50 or so. Those aged 18-28 can avail of free membership – click here for details.

Oh no! Some of us have formal musical training, but we are teachers, business people, communications professionals, health care workers, doctors, unwaged, retired, students, lecturers and many more!

We perform two of our own concerts in any given year, one at Christmas and another in May or June. Often we are asked to sing at other concerts and once we know we have members available to sing we agree to do these concerts, but only one or two each year.

It is hoped that your family and friends might like to see and hear you perform! Members are encouraged to sell tickets for all our own concerts. The Christmas concert generally sells out early, while the summer concert has grown in popularity of late and attracts a good audience.
